How to prep a countdown for Shorts

1. Stay vertical and well under three minutes. A square or taller video up to three minutes can be a Short. A Top 5 at four-second holds is about 25 seconds in this editor. Do not pad to fill the cap.
2. Keep the rank off the right edge and the bottom. Like, comment, and share sit on the right. The channel and the caption sit low. Both templates inset the number and the plate.
3. Pick a cover frame that shows a number. The Shorts shelf is a grid. A pretty frame with no rank looks like every other clip.
4. Upload in YouTube. ShortsRank does not connect to a channel. The download is the handoff.

What Shorts changes about the same file

Length is not the 60 second myth

The Shorts cap is three minutes for a vertical or square upload. Your countdown should still be as long as the ranks need, not as long as the cap allows.

The title of the video is a second title

The series title burned into the intro is not the YouTube title. They should promise the same category, in different lengths.

No end screen in the file

Do not leave a dead hold for a subscribe animation this tool does not draw. The outro card is the end.

A YouTube Shorts countdown is a vertical ranking you upload yourself. ShortsRank makes the file. YouTube decides it is a Short because of shape and length, not because a template said so. The old “must be under 60 seconds” rule is out of date. As of the limit YouTube rolled out in late 2024, a square or taller video up to three minutes can be a Short. That cap is a ceiling. It is a poor target for a countdown.

In this editor a Top 5 with four-second holds is about 25 seconds, including stings and cards. A Top 3 at the same hold is about 16 seconds. A Top 10 at three-second holds is a bit over half a minute. All of those sit inside a Short without borrowing time. Stretching holds so the file feels “long enough for YouTube” is how the middle ranks get abandoned. The Top 5 and Top 10 pages are the pacing math. This page is what the Shorts surface does to the frame.

The frame YouTube covers

The player is not a clean 9:16 stage.

• The right side carries like, dislike, comment, share, and remix. A title that runs under that column loses its ending.
• The bottom carries the channel name, the caption, and the audio line. A plate in the bottom fifth is a plate people do not read.
• The top is status, search, and sometimes a subscribe chip. A rank glued to the top edge is a rank in the chrome.

Slam keeps the large number in the upper third, inset from the left, and the title plate above the caption block. Board puts the number higher still, over a framed clip. Watch the preview and imagine a column of icons on the right. If your title is two full lines, shorten it until the surviving words are the important ones. The plate ellipsizes. Ellipsis is not a style.

Do not add a second caption inside the video that repeats the YouTube description. One title per rank is the type system. The description can list the ranks if you want the argument in comments. That list spoils #1. Decide on purpose.

Titles: one on the video, one on the upload

The series field becomes the intro card. It should match the promise: “Top 5 sideline saves,” not “Top 5” alone and not a sentence. The YouTube title can be a little longer because it is not burned over a moving picture. It should not promise a different category. If the clips are practice reps, do not title the upload like a league highlight.

Hashtags are packaging. They do not fix a first clip that fails to teach the format. The first hold, which is the highest number, has to be readable with the sound off. A lot of Shorts viewing starts muted.

Audio you can actually upload

The export keeps the audio inside each clip during that hold. It does not add a YouTube audio library track, and it does not strip one. If your file contains a song you ripped to “feel like a Short,” the claim risk uploads with the movie. Ambient sound you recorded is different. A famous commentary call you did not record is the broadcast, and it does not belong in the rail. The sports and gaming recipes stay on footage you captured.

If you want a track from YouTube’s library, add it in YouTube after a clean export, and only if that library’s terms cover your channel. Do not bake the download into the MP4 first.

Cover, and the shelf

When YouTube asks for a frame, pick a sting or a hold where the rank is large. The shelf crops attention down to a tile. A dark menu, a wide pitch with the ball in a corner, or a frame from before the number appears will look like an unlabeled clip. The number is the format at thumbnail size.

Resolution: free export is 720×1280, lifetime is 1080×1920. Both are 9:16. 1080p is the one to publish if you are done testing. The free page is the rest of that ceiling. Neither file is posted from here.

What not to expect from the outro

Long-form YouTube videos sometimes end on a card, an end screen, or a pinned comment you designed into the timeline. A Short from this tool ends on a short outro card with the series title. There is no subscribe animation, no info card, and no link button inside the movie. If you need those, you are making a different video, and the comparison with a full editor is the split.

The same 9:16 file can also be a Reel or a TikTok, with different chrome. Read Reels before you assume the cover crop matches YouTube’s shelf, and the TikTok countdown before you assume the right-hand buttons sit in the same place. Make one countdown. Check the frame in the app you post to. Do not rebuild the numbers by hand in three editors.

Does ShortsRank upload the Short for me?

No. You export a 9:16 file and upload it on YouTube yourself. There is no channel login on this site.

Do I still need #Shorts in the title?

Treat the hashtag as optional packaging. What classifies the upload is a vertical or square video within the current Shorts length cap, which is three minutes. The edit is the countdown, not the tag.

Will a 16:9 countdown work if I add bars?

This editor exports 9:16. A horizontal timeline with the subject in a small window is a different video. Crop to the action before you add the file if your master is wide.

Can the countdown be the full three minutes?

The timeline will not build a three-minute file from these holds. A Top 10 at 8 seconds is about a minute and a half, and that is already long for a countdown. Use a full editor if you need a long watch.
