Top 5 gaming fails
Updated 2026-09-23 · Dylan Yu
Gaming fails work as a Top 5 because the viewer already knows the genre. They know what a whiff looks like. They will wait for a worse one if the first one was fair. They will leave if the first one is a recording of someone else’s channel with your number pasted on it.
This recipe is for captures you made: your screen, your handheld, your squad on a call you are allowed to publish. It is not a guide to clipping a popular VOD and hoping the countdown format makes it original.
Pick five fails that are different kinds of wrong
A list of five identical missed shots is a montage. A ranking needs a reason for the order. Sort by how avoidable the mistake was, or by how late the player realized, or by how much the round still got won. Tell the viewer the scale in the series title. “Top 5 gaming fails” is generic and fine. “Top 5 ways I lost a won round” is better because #1 has a job.
Candidates that usually earn a slot:
- A mechanical miss with a readable setup, like a reload at the worst moment.
- A team call that everyone heard and nobody followed.
- A clutch that was real until the last second, which is a fail only because of how it ended.
- A movement mistake you can see without a kill feed.
- A fail that recovers, if the recovery is the joke.
Candidates to bench:
- A death that is only funny if you know a patch note.
- A clip whose entire information is a tiny HUD number in the corner the template will not enlarge.
- Anything you would have to explain for longer than the hold.
The HUD problem is specific to games. Rank numbers in the template are large. Damage numbers in the capture are not. If the joke is a number in the game UI, the title has to say it. Do not expect the viewer to read a 12-pixel counter under your #3.
Titles that set up instead of spoiling
Write the title as the second before the mistake.
- “Last mag.”
- “Called the rotate.”
- “Thought it was a teammate.”
- “One more peek.”
Avoid “omg” and avoid the word fail on every card. The series title already said fail. The card should say which kind.
Play them from #5 to #1 with the most obvious mistake first and the one that looked like a highlight until it wasn’t as #1. That order uses the countdown properly. Opening on the funniest fail and then showing four weaker ones is how gaming rankings die at the midpoint.
Audio
Game audio is part of the fail: the reload, the footstep, the stunned silence on the call. Keep it if it is your capture and you are comfortable with the game’s own policy on commercial use. A music track you added in another editor, or a radio that was playing in the room, is a separate problem. ShortsRank will not mute a stem. If the file contains music you cannot use, replace the file.
Voice chat needs the same permission as the picture. If a friend is identifiable and would not want the clip posted, that card does not go in. A ranking does not make a private call public.
Length
Most fails are two to four seconds once you cut the lobby. Do that cut before import. A 20 minute match will technically add, and then the warning about large files is doing its job. The hold slider is not a trimmer with handles. It plays from the start of the file for the number of seconds you set. If the fail is at minute twelve, the export will show minute zero. Trim first.
Free export covers three of the five. Build all five, preview them, and decide whether the last two are worth the lifetime unlock. Sometimes they are not, and a Top 3 is the better video. The editor lets you switch the count without throwing the files away. Extra cards become Bench. Watch that bench before you delete anything: a clip that felt weak in the lobby can be the only one with a readable silhouette once it is full frame.
Posting
The file is 9:16. Your caption can name the game. Your thumbnail, if the app lets you pick a frame, should be the #5 or the #1 sting — a big number reads at the size of a grid. Do not pick a frame where the only information is a dark menu.
If you want ten fails, read the Top 10 pacing page before you double the list. Ten gaming fails at four seconds each is a long apology. Three-second glimpses can work. Stories cannot.
Questions
Can I use another creator’s stream?
Not unless they licensed it to you. Record your own games, or use captures you have permission to edit.
Should the title spoil the fail?
Name the situation, not the punchline. “One bullet left” is a setup. “Dies immediately” is the clip.
What about game music?
If you cannot clear it, the export should not contain it. The editor does not strip a soundtrack for you.
