How to rank moments instead of dumping a reel

1. Mark peaks, not periods. A moment has a visible start: the save, the drop, the line that lands. A whole quarter is not a moment.
2. Trim so the peak is at the start of the file. The hold plays from the beginning of what you add. If the highlight is late, the export never reaches it.
3. Keep one clip per idea. Three angles of the same goal are one moment. Ranking them 5, 4, and 3 is padding.
4. Order by the claim in the series title. “Hardest to pull off,” “latest in the game,” or “the ones I would show a teammate.” Recency alone is a camera roll.

A ranking, not a montage

The number says these are ordered. A highlight reel can be excellent and still not be this format.

Short enough to judge

If you cannot say why #2 lost to #1, you selected a pile, not a ranking.

“Ranking best moments” sounds like a highlight reel with numbers pasted on. The reel and the ranking are different videos. A reel can flow. A ranking has to justify the order, one hold at a time, from a high number down to #1. ShortsRank is the second video, and only when the moments are yours.

The work happens before the template. You are selecting peaks out of a longer capture: a match, a stream you recorded, a practice, a day of takes. The editor will not find the peak for you.

What counts as one moment

A moment has a start the viewer can see without a diagram. The ball leaves. The save happens. The unbox reveals the thing. The line in the take finally lands. If you need thirty seconds of context before the picture makes sense, it is not a hold in a countdown. Put the context in the title — the score, the attempt number, the constraint — or cut the moment.

One idea, one file. If you have three angles of the same play, keep the angle that reads on a phone and bench the others. Ranking the same play in three slots teaches the viewer that the list is empty. The sports recipe is this rule on a sideline. The gaming recipe is the same rule when the “moment” is a mistake. The product recipe is the same rule when the moment is an object you filmed.

Trim, then rank

The hold starts at the first frame of the file you add and lasts for the seconds you set. It does not have in and out handles. A best moment buried at 00:40 will not appear if the hold is four seconds.

Cut the peak out in a trimmer you trust. Include only the run-up the viewer needs. Export that snippet, ideally H.264 in an MP4, and add the snippet. Leave the long recording on disk. Files over 60 MB warn. Files over 180 MB are refused. A full match is the wrong thing to drop into the rail even when it is under the cap, because you will scrub and the tab will feel it.

Cover-crop is center-weighted. If the moment lives on the edge of a horizontal frame, crop it centered before import. A wide shot of a whole field becomes a shot of the center circle.

A scale you can say out loud

“Best” is not a scale until you name it. Pick one and keep it for the whole countdown:

• Latest in the game, so #1 is the last real event, not the prettiest.
• Hardest to do, so a simple finish does not outrank a harder stop just because it scored.
• The ones you would actually show a teammate, which is allowed to be small.

Write that scale into the series title. “Top 5 best moments” is vague and people will argue past each other. “Top 5 saves from Saturday” is a scale. Then order the rail so the highest number plays first and #1 is last. If your favorite is first, you made a reel. Make the reel somewhere else, or move the favorite to the bottom and let the countdown pay it off.

Titles name the moment, not the word “best.” “Far post, phone” is a title. “Best one!!” is a caption you already used up.

Rights, especially when the footage feels public

A moment that was on television, in a movie, or on someone else’s livestream is not automatically material for your countdown. The format is not a fair-use machine. Use footage you shot or were given permission to edit. Game captures still depend on the publisher’s rules, not on how common the genre is. Crowd audio you recorded is part of your file. A song on the PA, or a soundtrack you added because highlights “need” music, may not be.

If one candidate is unclear, bench it. A shorter honest list is a better video. The Top 3 maker is the page for when the honest list is three.

Watch the ranking, not the memory

Play the countdown once without stopping to tweak. Note where you are waiting for the point. That card is too long, or the point is not at the start, or the title is doing nothing. Fix the trim before you change the skin.

Then decide the length. Five moments that differ are the usual short. Ten moments work when each is a glimpse, which the Top 10 page warns you about. Posting that file to Shorts, Reels, or TikTok is still a separate upload. This page ends when the order is fair and the peaks are actually in the file.

Questions

How many moments should I start with?

More than the countdown, then cut. For a Top 5, seven or eight candidates is enough. For a Top 3, five candidates. The cut is the edit.

Can I rank the best moments of a movie, a stream, or a pro game I did not film?

Only if you have the rights to those pictures and that audio. Loving the moment is not a license. Film the event you are at, or use captures you were allowed to edit.

What if the best frame is a single hit in a long file?

Cut that hit out first. The seconds control is not a trim handle. A 20 minute file also trips the size warning and can be refused past 180 MB.

Is “best” the same as “most viewed”?

No. This tool does not read view counts. “Best” is your order. If you mean most viewed, you need data and you need the right to show the clips. Do not put that phrase on a video that is neither.
