How to cut a countdown down to three

1. Admit you only have three. Three different moments are a video. Two repeats plus a winner are a montage with a number on it.
2. Set the length to 3. Extra cards stay on the bench. They are not in the export until you swap them in.
3. Give #3 a clean read and #1 the wait. The first hold teaches the category. The last hold is the one you would not spoil in the caption.
4. Preview the whole pass. At a 4 second hold the file is about 16 seconds. If you are bored, a longer hold will not save it.

Three is the countdown you make when you refuse to pad. A Top 3 countdown maker is worth opening when you have three moments that are actually different, and a fourth would be an apology in the title. Five is a calmer default when you truly have five. Ten is a pacing problem. Three is a finished short.

Intro is about 1.3 seconds. Outro is about 1.2 seconds. Each rank adds a sting just under half a second, then the hold.

Those are estimates from this timeline, not a watch-time guarantee. They are short on purpose. A Top 3 that runs past half a minute is usually three stories, not three ranks. If each clip needs a setup, a joke, and a reaction, you are in a full editor, not in a countdown maker.

The free plan will preview a longer hold and will export only up to 4 seconds. Lifetime, at a one-time unlock, allows 8. The dialog says which cut you are accepting. It does not trim in secret.

What the three jobs are

1. #3, first on screen. The clearest example of the category. If the series title says fails, this one should look like a fail without a paragraph of context.
2. #2. The near argument. In a list this short, #2 does more work than it does in a Top 10, because there is no middle to hide in.
3. #1, last. The clip you would be annoyed to have spoiled. If it is only #1 because it was filmed most recently, renumber.

The rail is play order. The winner sits at the bottom. Drag handles and the up and down buttons both move cards. Keyboard users can focus a card and press Arrow Up or Arrow Down.

Titles on a short list

You do not have five chances to explain the joke. Each plate has to land.

Useful shapes are a result (“Open-net miss”), a constraint (“One try left”), or a place (“Far post”). Weak shapes are “Number two,” “Wait for it,” and the camera’s filename. “Wait for it” means the interesting frame is late. Trim the file so the action starts at the beginning. The hold plays from the start of what you add. It is not an in-and-out trimmer.

Read the three titles from #3 to #1 out loud. If two of them could swap without anyone noticing, cut one or rename both. A Top 3 of the same shot three times is a loop, not a ranking.

When to stop yourself from stretching to five

Stretch when you have two more honest moments. Do not stretch because a template gallery treats five as the length you are supposed to hit. The Top 5 page is the right next read if the extra clips are real. If they are the same moment from a worse angle, leave them on the bench.

Bench is not delete. Removing a card revokes the local preview URL. The file on your disk stays. You can swap a benched clip into the three without adding it again, as long as the tab is still open.

What the free file of a Top 3 is

Because free export keeps three clips, a Top 3 does not get the “we dropped your last two” cut that a free Top 5 does. You still get the mark, the 4 second cap, and 720×1280. That is a real countdown you can post while you learn the safe area, and it is not a clean 1080p master. The free ranking page spells the ceiling out without turning this page into a price sheet.

Play the sample at Top 3 before you replace it. You will see whether Slam or Board keeps the number off the edges a phone UI will cover. Then add your files. The posting apps are still your job.

Questions

Is a Top 3 too short to be a ranking?

No. Three is a list with a last place and a winner. It is the right length when a fourth clip would repeat the third.

Can the free plan export all three ranks?

Yes, as a count. The free file still caps each hold at 4 seconds, burns a shortsrank.com mark, and writes 720×1280. It does not silently drop a card the way a free Top 5 export keeps only the first three.

What if I later find a fourth clip?

Switch the control to Top 5. Cards you had benched can move into the rail. You do not rebuild the titles from scratch.

Which clip is #1 in a list this short?

The one the series title promised. With only two setups, a weak finale is obvious. If you cannot name why it won, you do not have a ranking yet.
