Top 5 countdown maker

Five is the countdown length that still feels like a list and still fits a short. A Top 5 countdown maker is worth using when you have five moments that are actually different, and you want the viewer to feel the count. Four can work. Six starts to feel like you could not decide. Ten is a different video, with different pacing, covered on its own page.

The clock

In ShortsRank a Top 5 is an intro, five stings, five holds, and an outro.

With a 4 second hold, the body is about 22 seconds of clips and stings, plus a little over 2 seconds of cards. Call it 25 seconds before you write a caption. That is enough for a title to be read twice and not so long that #1 arrives after people have left.

If one clip needs 8 seconds of run-up, do not give all five the same treatment. The per-clip slider exists so the slow one can breathe and the fast one can get out of the way. The free tier will not export a hold over 4 seconds. Lifetime will, up to 8. Preview will show you the longer hold either way, with a watermark if you are on the free plan, so you can see the pacing before you pay.

Writing the five titles

Each title is a claim about that clip. Write them as if the number were not there, because the number is already painted in a much larger size.

Useful shapes:

• A result: “Open-net miss.”
• A constraint: “One bullet left.”
• A comparison: “The quieter take.”
• A place: “Far post, phone footage.”

Weak shapes:

• “Number 3.”
• “This one is crazy.”
• “Wait for it.”

“Wait for it” is a confession that the clip is late. Move the interesting frame earlier or cut the hold. The title should still make sense if the viewer is watching without sound, because many people are.

Read the titles in order from #5 to #1 out loud. If two of them could be swapped without anyone noticing, the clips are too similar or the words are too vague. Rename or cut.

Choosing the order

Lay the five cards in the rail and watch the sample or your footage once without stopping to tweak. Note where you got bored. That card is either too long or in the wrong seat.

A reliable order:

1. First up (#5): a clean, readable example. It teaches the viewer what kind of clip this countdown contains.
2. Middle (#4 and #3): the ones that need a little context in the title.
3. Penultimate (#2): the near-miss, the one people will argue should have won.
4. Last (#1): the clip you are willing to spoil the rest of the video to protect.

Drag handles and the up/down buttons both reorder. Keyboard users can focus a card and press Arrow Up or Arrow Down. The winner moves down the rail, not up. The rail is play order. A written Top 5 on a blog puts #1 at the top. A video cannot, or it stops being a countdown.

The first second

The intro card carries the series title, which should match the promise in your caption. “Top 5 gaming fails” is a promise about the footage. If the clips are highlights, do not call them fails. The mismatch is what makes people swipe, not the typeface.

After the intro, the #5 sting is a full-frame number. It is short on purpose. Do not expect it to explain the joke. The title plate on the hold does that.

Safe area still applies on a Top 5. Five numbers means five chances to hide a rank under a like button. Both templates keep the rank inset. If you later add stickers in another app, do not park them on the number.

Free cut versus the full five

You can build and preview all five on the free plan. Exporting all five, clean, is the lifetime unlock at $24. If you export without it, the dialog tells you the free cut will keep the first three cards, cap each at 4 seconds, burn the watermark, and write 720p. It will not quietly drop a clip. You confirm the cut or you go to pricing. Preview the cut you are about to accept: the first three cards are not automatically your best three, they are whichever cards you left at the top of the rail.

That is also why the sample button matters. Load a sample Top 5, watch the Slam template, switch to Board, and only then replace the samples with your files. You learn the safe area before you spend time on titles.

Recipes that are naturally five items: gaming fails and sports moments. If you are stretching to ten for the sake of the number, read the Top 10 page before you film five extra clips you do not need.

Why is Top 5 the default?

Five holds fit a short without rushing. Each clip can stay up long enough to read a title. Top 10 needs shorter holds or a much longer file.

Can the free plan export a Top 5?

You can preview all five. A free download keeps the first three clips, caps them at 4 seconds, and adds a watermark. Lifetime exports all five clean.

Which clip should be #1?

The one you would be annoyed to have spoiled in the first second. Put a strong but lesser clip first so the countdown has somewhere to go.
