How to make a ranking short

The sequence, in the order that wastes the least time

1. Trim to the action. The editor plays from the start of the file for the seconds you set. Cut the lobby, the walk-up, and the celebration that is not the moment.
2. Check rights on each file. Your picture and your audio, or a license you can point to. One uncleared song in the middle of the rail is in the export.
3. Add, order, and retitle. Highest number at the top of the rail, #1 at the bottom. Replace filenames with a claim about the clip.
4. Preview, then export in front of the tab. Watch once muted and once with sound. Export a 9:16 file and upload it yourself.

Making a ranking short is a sequence, not a mood. You select moments, you put them in countdown order, you name them, you export a vertical file, you post it somewhere else. ShortsRank covers the middle of that sequence in the browser. This page is the order of operations, including the parts that happen before you open the tab.

1. Cut the moment out of the recording

A ranking hold is a few seconds. Your camera roll is not. The editor starts at the beginning of the file you add and plays for the duration you set. If the goal is at minute twelve, the export shows minute zero.

Trim first, in any cutter you already trust. Keep a little run-up only when the run-up is the joke. Name the trimmed file after the claim you think you will put on screen, so the rail is readable before you retype titles. Leave the master recording alone.

While you are there, drop anything you cannot explain in one line, and drop anything whose audio you do not control. Five clean files beat seven files you will apologize for.

2. Decide the count before you decorate

Top 3, Top 5, and Top 10 are the only lengths. Pick from the footage, not from a trend.

• Three, when a fourth would repeat. About 16 seconds at a 4 second hold. See the Top 3 maker.
• Five, when each item is a different kind of moment and you want the title read twice. About 25 seconds at 4 seconds. See the Top 5 maker.
• Ten, only when each item is a glimpse. Three-second holds land a bit over half a minute. Eight-second holds on all ten are a video people do not finish. See the Top 10 maker.

3. Add the files in the browser

Open the editor. Add MP4, WebM, or MOV. Nothing is uploaded to ShortsRank. The warning starts above 60 MB. The refusal is above 180 MB. If a MOV will not decode, it is often HEVC. Export H.264 and add the new file.

Load the sample once if you have not seen the layout. Then replace the samples. Do not ship the sample.

4. Order the rail as play order

The top card plays first and carries the highest rank. The bottom card is #1. This is the opposite of a blog list, and it is the whole trick. Playing the winner first throws the trick away.

A reliable shape:

• First slot: a clean example that proves the series title.
• Middle: clips that need the title to explain a constraint.
• Next to last: the one people will argue should have won.
• Last: the clip you are protecting.

Series title and caption should promise the same category. “Top 5 gaming fails” filled with highlights is why people swipe. The mismatch is the edit, not the font.

5. Retitle every card

The editor guesses from the filename. Guessing is not a title. Write a result, a constraint, or a place. Delete two words. If it still makes sense, stop. The plate allows two lines.

Do not write “Number 4.” The number is already the largest type on screen. Do not write “This one is crazy.” That is a reaction, and the clip was supposed to be the reaction.

6. Pick a skin and watch it like a stranger

Slam keeps a large number on a dark field and a plate lower down, clear of the worst of the caption block. Board puts the number above a framed clip, which helps when the footage is bright and busy. Switch once. Then stop switching.

Watch with sound off. Anywhere you are lost, the picture or the title failed. Watch with sound on. Confirm you can stand the audio being public. Set seconds per clip after that viewing. Two seconds is a glimpse. Four is a normal beat. Eight is a story and should be rare, and it is a lifetime ceiling, not the free export.

7. Export with the tab in front

Press export and leave the tab visible. The render follows the playhead so the picture and the clip audio stay in step. Chrome and Edge try an H.264 MP4. If the machine cannot encode that, the note under the bar tells you what you received. There is no silent format swap.

Free export, if you confirm it, keeps the first three cards, caps holds at 4 seconds, adds a small mark, and writes 720×1280. It asks first. A Top 3 therefore exports as a complete count on the free plan. A Top 5 does not, unless you have unlocked the higher ceiling. Details live on the free page and on pricing. 8. Post it yourself

Download, then upload in the app you actually use. Pick a cover frame where a rank is readable. Write a caption that either preserves the wait or lists the titles on purpose — listing them spoils #1, which is a choice, not a default.

Safe areas differ. YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok cover different edges of the same 9:16 file. Do not park new stickers on the number after the fact.

The export checklist is the last pass: resolution, watermark, audio, filename. When the file plays and the rights are clean, the editor’s job is over.

Questions

Can I start from a script instead of clips?

Not in ShortsRank. If the video is a narrated list and you have no footage, use a tool built for that. Come back when you have files.

Do I need a full editor as well?

Only if you need a cold open, speech captions, a split screen, or a speed ramp. If the whole short is the countdown, you can stop at the download. The CapCut comparison is the honest split.

I have a folder of stills. Where does this sequence start?

It does not start. Film a few seconds of each thing first, trim those clips, then come back to step 3. A still with a number on it is a slideshow, and this editor will not animate one.

The interesting frame is in the middle of a long file. Will the hold find it?

No. Trim in another app so the action is at the start, then add the short piece. The seconds slider is a duration, not an in-point.
